Heavy Metal – The Roadster Pickup That Redefined Custom Truck Building

In the early 2000s, Scott’s Hotrods ’n Customs set out to build a truck that would turn the custom world upside down. The result was “Heavy Metal” — a radically reimagined 1956 Chevrolet 3100 pickup that erased the line between hot rod and showpiece. Built entirely in-house and crafted from steel rather than filler, Heavy Metal became an instant icon when it appeared on the hit TV show RIDES and went on to collect national awards, magazine features, and a permanent place in hot rod history.

From the start, Heavy Metal wasn’t built to follow trends — it was built to make them. The project began as a classic Chevy pickup, but under the skilled hands of the Scott’s team, every panel was reshaped, re-proportioned, or rebuilt from scratch. The roof was removed and the cab converted into a roadster-style cockpit, giving the truck its distinctive topless silhouette. The bed was shortened and smoothed, fenders were widened, the grille was redesigned, and every seam and contour was hand-worked in steel — hence the name “Heavy Metal.” The goal was simple: zero shortcuts, zero compromise, and zero filler. Just pure metal craftsmanship.

Underneath the sculpted body sits a Scott’s Custom Chassis, engineered to deliver modern performance and show-level stance. It features an independent front suspension, four-link rear setup, rack-and-pinion steering, and Air Ride Technologies components for an adjustable ride height. Power comes from a MagnaCharger Supercharged LS1 V8, paired with a 700R4 automatic transmission — a combination that delivers over 500 horsepower with reliability to match its style. Wilwood disc brakes and polished billet components complete the performance package.

Inside, Heavy Metal is just as bold. The handcrafted interior combines fine leather, billet accents, and custom instrumentation, echoing the same balance of raw power and refined detail found throughout the build. Every inch was designed, fabricated, and finished in-house by the Scott’s Hotrods team — no outsourcing, no off-the-shelf parts.

When Heavy Metal debuted, it stopped crowds in their tracks. Its appearance on RIDES showcased not just the truck itself, but the passion and precision that define Scott’s Hotrods ’n Customs. It represented the spirit of early-2000s custom culture — a time when creativity, craftsmanship, and attitude collided to create something entirely new. The truck went on to win major awards, appear in MotorTrend and Street Rodder, and cement Scott’s reputation as one of the top custom fabrication shops in America.

Today, Heavy Metal stands as a milestone build — a reminder that with enough imagination and skill, even a humble pickup can become rolling art. More than two decades later, it continues to inspire builders, collectors, and enthusiasts who understand that true craftsmanship is timeless. Heavy Metal isn’t just a truck; it’s a statement — a showcase of what’s possible when metal meets mastery at Scott’s Hotrods ’n Customs.
